SALEM, Ore. -- Hannah Deighton (Jr., D, Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic HS) and Fionn Fortune (Jr., M/F, Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes/Hamilton Coll.) each scored a goal to lead Willamette University to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over crosstown rival Corban University in an exhibition game for the Bearcats on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Sparks Field. It was the first game for the Bearcats on the newly renovated field. Although the game was an exhibition for Willamette, it counted as a regular season game for Corban, which fell to 1-1 on the season.

All of the scoring was in the first half. The teams had just finished playing the first 30 minutes of the game when Willamette moved in front by scoring on a corner kick. Shanna Keil (Jr., F, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) took the corner kick and sent the ball into the middle of the box about eight yards out. Deighton headed the ball on a line drive into the top of the net at 30:23.

Corban tied the score at 1-1 just over five minutes later at 35:44 on a goal by Lexi McQueary. The play began with a cross form the right side by Hannah Shore. Emma Kosmala headed the ball back toward the right side, where McQueary headed in into the goal.

The tie didn't last long, as Fortune provided the game-winning goal at 37:48. Maddy Hooker (So., D, Bellingham, WA/Sehome HS) passed the ball to Fortune in the center of the box. Fortune controlled the ball, took one touch as goalkeeper Elizabeth Brock charged out, and shot past Brock into the net. The goal by Fortune was recorded just 36 seconds after a shot by Corban's Riley Smetzler hit the crossbar.

Corban held an 8-7 advantage in total shots at halftime, but WU owned the 2-1 lead after building a 5-3 edge in shots on target.

The Bearcats outshot the Warriors 9-5 in the second half. For the game, Willamette outshot Corban 16-13 overall and 7-5 in shots on goal.

Two of Corban's shots in the second half occurred on the same quick sequence. Both shots were taken by McQueary -- just six seconds apart -- at 73:47 and 73:53. Each shot was blocked by the Bearcats. Willamette took five shots the rest of the way. Corban registered two shots in the final eight minutes, but both shots were easily saved.

Perhaps the game's top save was made by WU starting goalkeeper Kristen Barclay (Jr., GK, Kenmore, WA/Cedar Park Christian School) at 15:14. Barclay made a reaction save with her left hand on a shot by Shore from the left side that was on its way to scoring just inside the right post. The save kept the game 0-0 until Deighton score for the Bearcats about 15 minutes later.

Barclay recorded a total of two saves while playing the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Grasiela Quevado-Ramos (So., GK, Salem, OR/West Salem HS) played 39:52 in goal for the Bearcats, while Jordan Roue (Fr., GK, San Jose, CA/Prospect HS) played the final 5:08. Brock earned five saves while playing all 90 minutes for the Warriors.

Willamette will take on the Bearcat Alumni on Sunday, Aug. 26 at Sparks Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. (PDT).
