TACOMA, Wash. -- Shanna Keil (Jr., F, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) scored her sixth goal of the season for Willamette University and Phoebe Bunn scored her first goal of the year for Pacific Lutheran University, as the Bearcats and the Lutes tied 1-1 in two overtimes during a Northwest Conference women's soccer game on Saturday, Oct. 6. Willamette remained undefeated at 9-0-2 on the season and remained in first place in the NWC at 5-0-2. Pacific Lutheran moved to 6-3-3 overall, 5-2-1 in the NWC.
Keil produced the game's first goal at 57:23 on an unassisted shot. Her six goals are tied for first place in the NWC. She leads the NWC four assists and 16 total points. Bunn tied the game at 74:32 after receiving a pass from Ellie Johnson. Neither team scored in the final 15:07 of regulation or during the two 10-minute overtime periods.
Kristen Barclay (Jr./So., Kenmore, WA/Cedar Park Christian School) earned five saves for the Bearcats. Natalie Robinson registered four saves for the Lutes.
"It was a solid all-around performance for us today," Willamette Head Coach Hillary Arthur said. "Offensively we created well up front, and defensively we limited PLU's ability to create quality looks on goal. It was a tough physical game and we did well withstanding PLU's pressure, while maintaining our style of play."
Willamette had most of the top opportunities in overtime, but PLU had the final chance in the closing seconds of the second overtime. A counter-attack by the Lutes ended with a shot just before the final buzzer, when Barclay and a defender forced Tasha Tennyson to shoot wide.
The only shot in the first overtime was taken by Keil and was saved by Robinson at 96:39. In the second overtime, a shot by Sydney Wilson (Fr., M, Olympia, WA/Capital HS) of Willamette went wide at 101.33 and a shot from Lacey Jones (So., F, Portland, OR/David Douglas HS) for the Bearcats at 106:13 was stopped by Robinson.
Leah Magee of Pacific Luthean took four shots in the first half, but two were not on goal and two were saved by Barclay. Rachel Ross also had one shot that went wide for the Lutes in the first half. Annie Strom (Jr., D, Mount Vernon, WA/Mount Vernon HS) of Willamette took the game's first hsot just one minute into the contest, forcing Robinson to make a save. It was WU's only shot in the first 45 minutes.
Each team took two shots in the first six minutes of the second half. A header by Ross was saved by by Barclay at 47:22. Shortly after the save, Willamette created a shot for Fionn Fortune (Jr., M/F, Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes/Hamilton Coll.) at 47:43 that went wide at the other end of the field. A shot by Wilson of Willamette was saved by Robinson at 49:56 and shot by Liz Griffith of PLU was stopped by Barclay at 50:45.
Keil's goal was scored on the next shot nearly seven minutes later. WU had two more shots before Magee of PLU sent a shot off the crossbar at 73:30. Bunn scored just over a minute later to tie the game.
Pacific Lutheran completed the game with a 13-9 edge in total shots and a 6-5 lead in shots on goal. The Lutes also earned a 7-3 margin in corner kicks, but committed 16 fouls compared to just four fouls on the Bearcats.
Willamette will take on Pacific University on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Sparks Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PDT).
