SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University battled crosstown rival Corban University on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Sparks Field, but the visiting Warriors defeated the Bearcats, 4-0, in a women's soccer exhibition game. Corban remained 2-0 on the season, while the Bearcats stayed at 0-0. Willamette will open the regular season on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Warner Pacific University, starting at 7 p.m. (PDT) at Sparks Field.

Corban tallied the game's first goal at the 16:57 mark when Shayla Hatfield scored on an extreme-angle shot near the end line that went into the lower left corner of the goal. Hatfield ran down the ball after a short back-pass near the top of the penalty area was sent past WU goalkeeper Rachel Compton (Jr., GK, Lake Stevens, WA/Lake Stevens HS/Skagit Valley College).

The Warriors continued to lead 1-0 at halftime. Corban outshot Willamette 9-3 in the first 45 minutes, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.

Just over 13 minutes into the second half at 58:08, Fatima Jimenez of Corban scored a goal from 17 yards out on the right side into the upper left corner. Alysia Alvarado earned an assist on the play. Jimenez hit the net again at 68:52 on a 10-yard shot from near the right sideline. Despite the difficult angle, Alvarado sent the ball into the upper left portion of the goal.

Corban registered the final goal of the night on a shot by Alvarado from 17 yards into the upper right corner of the net. The shot was deflected by Compton near the top of the 6-yard box before it went into the goal.

The Warriors finished with a 20-5 advantage in total shots and a 12-2 edge in shots on goal. Corban also gained a 4-1 margin in corner kicks. Compton made eight saves for the Bearcats, as she earned four in each half. Makida Herbert recorded two saves to claim the shutout for Corban.

Mei Suetsugu led the Warriors with four total shots, while Hatfield and Alvarado each took three shots. Anika Firehammer (So., F, Minnetonka, MN/Hopkins HS/Albion College) topped Willamette with two shots. Firehammer and Jackie Gilroy (Sr., F, Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island HS) each placed one shot on goal for the Bearcats.
