Salem, OR - Playing their first home game of the season, Bearcat Women's Soccer picked up a 2-0 victory over the Caltech Beavers at Sparks Field. Both goals for Willamette came from corner kicks delivered by Jaime Haysman Boaler, the first goal scored by Ella McComas in the 18th minute and the second on a header by Reagan Doty in the 74th minute.
Willamette had the better of the first half, outshooting the Beavers 7-2 and having the only two corner kicks of the half, the first one resulting in the goal by McComas. The Bearcats controlled possession and defensively did a good job on Caltech midfielder Louise Marie Choi-Schattle who was coming off a two-goal performance yesterday against Linfield.
Caltech found their offensive form in the second half, leading to 8 shots and earning 6 corner kicks, but Willamette's defense and goalkeeper Sam Borngasser were able to keep them off the scoreboard. Doty's header off another stellar corner kick by Haysman Boaler made the score 2-0 and gave the Bearcats some breathing room as they closed out the match.
Sam Borngasser made 5 saves in goal for Willamette to earn her first shutout of the season. The Bearcats' 13 shots were spread evenly among the team with Nina Krassner-Cybulski, Claire Warthen, and Gabriella Weis contributing two each and seven other Bearcats with one.
Willamette returns to action at Sparks Field on Saturday, September 14th, at noon when they take on the California Lutheran. Then the open Northwest Conference play at home on Wednesday, September 18th, at 7:45 pm versus Lewis & Clark.
