Borngasser's 7 saves keep Cal Lutheran off the scoreboard in 0-0 tie

Salem, OR - Willamette Women's Soccer played a hard-fought match this afternoon against defending National Champion California Lutheran University and came away with a scoreless draw.

The Regals of Cal Lutheran controlled the action for much of the first half, getting off 8 shots to the Bearcat's three, but only placing one on goal.  With the defensives holding strong for each team the match headed into halftime scoreless.

Both teams came out of halftime looking to attack, with Cal Luthern starting first by taking 4 shots in the opening minutes of the half, two requiring saves by Sam Borngasser.  In the 60th minute, Willamette picked up the momentum and the next seven shots of the match would come from the foot of a Bearcat, but none would find the back of the net.

Borngasser and the Bearcat defense continued to play well and the senior goalkeeper made several more key saves in the second half, including a brilliant grab of a Regal's shot from about 12 yards out in the 79th minute.  For the match, Borngasser ended with seven saves and several strong defensive plays against crosses into the box.

For the match, the Regals outshot the Bearcats 20-13 and 7-3 on goal.  Midfielder Reagan Doty led Willamette with three shots, followed by two from Claire Warthen and Ella Abraham.

Women's Soccer opens conference play at home on Wednesday, September 18th, at 7:45 pm vs Lewis & Clark College.  The game will follow the men's match, also against Lewis & Clark, which begins at 5:00 pm.
