(WOMEN'S TENNIS) PORTLAND, ORE. -- Lewis & Clark College edged Willamette University, 5-4, in a Northwest Conference match hosted by the Pioneeers on Saturday, March 3. L&C improved to 3-4 overall, 3-3 in the NWC, while Willamette dropped to 2-5 overaall, 2-3 in the confeerence.
The Pioneers gained an edge by slipping past the Bearcats in two of three doubles matches, then held onto the lead by winning the day's closest singles match, when Maggie Peage edged Willamette's Alyssa Morrison (Fr., Anacortes, WA/Anacortes HS), 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3. Lewis & Clark also was victorious at #1 singles, where Lisa Harunaga defeated Tiffany Kam (Jr., Pearl City, HI/Punahou HS), 6-3, 7-5.
Alaine Anderson (Jr., Santa Ana, CA/Foothills HS) won #2 singles for Willamette, as she breezed past Clio Beatty, 6-0, 6-1. The Bearcats also recorded singles victories at the #4 and #5 positions.
Lewis & Clark won #1 doubles and #3 doubles by close margins. In the #1 doubles match, Harunaga and Peach edged Kam and Anderson, 9-8, by winning a tie-breaker, 7-5. At #3 doubles, Teresa Kiemner and Takako Shibata of L&C defeated Becca Younger (So., Albuquerque, NM/Sandia Prep) and Elise Helvie (So., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly HS), 9-7. WU's #2 doubles team, Morrison and Abby Funabiki (So., Pullman, WA/Pullman HS), cruised to an 8-1 victory over Beatty and Asami Kimura of L&C.
Willamette plays another Northwest Conference road match on Sunday, March 4 at Linfield College. The action is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. (PST).
