La Verne Defeats Willamette, 9-0

CLAREMONT, CALIF. -- The University of La Verne, ranked #7 in the West Region of NCAA Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeated Willamette University, 9-0, in a women's tennis match at the Claremont Club on Monday, March 25.

La Verne improved to 8-3 on the season. Willamette fell to 1-11 overall.

At #1 doubles, La Verne's top team of Jeanette Losaria and Laina Matsuda defeated Sabrina Gutierrez (Jr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) and Denise Poltavski (So., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) of Willamette, 8-2.

Gutierrez gave Andrea Madrigal a tough battle in the first set at #1 singles before Madrigal won the match, 7-5, 6-1. Likewise, Poltavski played a close first set with Losaria at #2 singles, but Losario prevailed, 7-5, 6-1. The Leopards won all six singles matches in straight sets.

The Willamette women's tennis team will continue its Spring Break trip by taking on Whittier College on Tuesday, March 26. Match time in Whittier, Calif., is set for 3:30 p.m. (PDT).
