Bearcats Fall to Whittier, 8-1; Gutierrez and Poltavski Win at #1 Doubles

WHITTIER, CALIF. -- Whittier College, ranked 17th in the West Region of NCAA Division III, won all six singles matches on its way to an 8-1 victory over Willamette University in a women's tennis match on Tuesday, March 26 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.

Willamette picked up its only win at #1 doubles, where Sabrina Gutierrez (Jr., Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park HS) and Denise Poltavski (So., Woodland Hills, CA/El Camino Real HS) combined for an 8-5 triumph over Maegan Zamilpa and Liliana Serylo.

The Poets won #2 and #3 doubles for a 2-1 lead heading into the singles matches. At #2 doubles, the Whittier team of Adrienne Hamada and Benay Weintraub shut out Rachel Heringer (Fr., Salem, OR/South Salem HS) and Stephanie Matsuura (Fr., Hilo, HI/Waiakea HS) of Willamette, 8-0.

In the #3 doubles match, Bree Campanero and Lauren Gelgur from Whittier defeated Emily Guimont (Fr., El Dorado Hills, CA/Newbury Park HS) and Lizzie Kubitz (So., Anchorage, AL/West Anchorage HS), 8-2.

Whittier registered straight-set wins all of the singles matches. Zamilpa was victorious at #1 singles, as she downed Gutierrez, 6-1, 6-2.

The Bearcats do not play again until Saturday, April 6, when they are scheduled to host the University of Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action. Match time at the Willamette University Tennis Courts is set for 1 p.m. (PDT).
