Ginsburg, Oberg, Lieske Fall in Close Sets, as Puget Sound Downs Willamette

SALEM, Ore. -- Three Willamette University women's tennis players fell to the University of Puget Sound in competitive singles matches on Sunday, April 25, as the Loggers defeated the Bearcats, 8-0. The Northwest Conference dual match began at the WU Tennis Courts and finished at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club due to the weather.

Close singles matches involved Siena Ginsburg (Sr., Bend, OR/Summit HS), Alyssa Siobhan Oberg (Grad., Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS), and Paisley Lieske (So., Seattle, WA/Vashon Island HS) of Willamette at the #2, #3, and #4 positions, respectively. Camille Gibney (Fy., La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS) from WU also played in a tight match at #5 singles that was unfinished when the overall match ended.

Puget Sound improved to 1-8 on the season, 1-7 in the NWC. Willamette slipped to 0-8 overall, 1-6 in the NWC.

At #2 singles, Lia Van Steeter of Puget Sound held off Ginsburg, 6-3, 6-3. In the #3 singles match, the Loggers' Zoe Love outlasted Oberg by rallying for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory in a super tie-breaker played instead of a third set. The #4 singles match was won by Marissa Perez of Puget Sound, who defeated Lieske, 6-3, 7-5. Other winners in singles were Andie Machida at #1 and Tatyana Cox at #6. Laura Schneidman of Puget Sound was leading Willamette's Gibney in the first set at #5 singles, 5-4, when the overall match concluded.

The top doubles match went to Machida and Van Steeter as they moved past Sarah Dean (Sr., Boise, ID/Timberline HS) and Ginsburg, 8-2. The Loggers also claimed 8-2 victories at #2 doubles and #3 doubles.

Prior to the match, Willamette's players honored seniors Ginsburg, Oberg, Dean, and Sylvia Marr (Sr., Grants Pass, OR/Hidden Valley HS).

Willamette will complete the season with two matches against Whitworth University on Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2. Both matches will be played in Spokane, Washington, with Saturday's competition beginning at 4 p.m. (PDT) and Sunday's action starting at 9 a.m.
