SALEM, Ore. -- The Willamette University women's tennis team honored senior Camille Gibney (Sr., La Crescenta, CA/Crescenta Valley HS) before the Bearcats played their Senior Day match against Whitman College on Saturday, April 16. The match started on campus at the WU Tennis Courts, but was moved indoors at the Salem Tennis and Swim Club when rain impacted play. Whitman defeated Willamette, 9-0, as the Blues improved to 13-5 overall and to 7-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette ended its season at 0-9 overall, 0-8 in the NWC.
Whitman built a 3-0 lead in doubles. At #1 doubles, Angel Le and Arianna Castellanos downed Willamette's team of Anika Groener (Fy., Bend, OR/Summit HS) and Richelle Suzuki (Fy., Mililani, HI/Mililani HS), 8-1. At #2 doubles, Irene Tsai and Ilina Jha won for the Blues by an 8-2 margin against Gibney and McKenna Turner (So., Junction City, OR/Junction City HS) of WU. The #3 doubles match was won by Camilla Tarpy-Schwed and Zoe Zapf from Whitman.
The Blues achieved straight-set wins throughout the singles lineup. Winning players for Whitman in singles were Tarpy Schwed at #1, Tsai at #2, Mae Thorp at #3, Grace Carter at #4, Piper Rylander at #5, and Zapf at #6.
