1974-75 Team Handball

Willamette’s team handball club won the Collegiate Division title at the U.S. Team Handball National Championships in 1974 and 1975. At the championships, the Bearcats earned wins over club teams from UCLA, USC, Ohio State, the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Willamette won the 1974 Collegiate Championship with a 15-10 win over Ohio State in Monmouth, New Jersey. Willamette won the 1975 Collegiate Championship with an 18-11 win over UCLA in a game played at Ohio State. The Bearcats placed fourth in the Open Division in 1974 and 1975. Team members Dan Foster and Joe Story, goalkeeper, were named to the U.S. National Team after the 1974 title and later went on to become members of the Board of Directors for U.S.A. Team Handball. Foster was named to the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team, while Story played on the 1984 and 1988 U.S. Olympic Teams. Coaches for Willamette’s teams were Foster and Bill Fleming.
