TACOMA, WASH. -- Senior left-handed pitcher Clint Moran (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley HS) threw a complete-game and allowed just four hits, as Willamette University defeated the University of Puget Sound, 10-0, in the first game of their four-game Northwest Conference series on Saturday, April 12. The Loggers won a slugfest in the second game, 14-13, as the teams split the doubleheader.

Willamette and Puget Sound will complete the series with two games on Sunday, April 13. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PDT) at Logger Field.

During Saturday's doubleheader, Willamette power hitter Kyle Stalker (Jr., 1B, Bellevue, WA/Sammamish HS) hit two homers -- one in each game. He has blasted 18 homers this season and has pounded out 32 home runs in his career. T.C. Lee (Fr., LF, Lafayette, CA/Acalanes HS) hit a grand slam home run in the second game.

In the first game, Sean Anderson (Sr., CF, Klamath Falls, OR/Klamath Union HS) went 2 for 5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Ellis Webster (Jr., 2B, Carlsbad, CA/San Dieguito HS) was 2 for 3, while Colin Young (Sr., DH/RF, Portland, OR/Lincoln HS) was 2 for 4. Lee earned two hits in five at bats.

Willamette built a 4-0 lead by scoring two runs in the second inning and two more in the third. The 'Cats added another run in the fourth stanza, plated four runs in the sixth inning and registered the final run in the ninth.

In the second inning, WU benefited from three walks and a hit batsman. Dan Maslanik (Jr., C, Boulder, CO/Fairview HS) singled to drive in the first run with the only hit of the inning. The second run scored when Webster walked with the bases loaded.

Stalker hit a solo home run to center field with one out in the third inning. Anderson followed with a double, then moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch. Lee recorded an RBI single in the fourth inning.

WU's four-run outburst in the sixth featured four hits. With two outs and runners at second and third, the Loggers walked Stalker to load the bases. Anderson batted next and drove in two runs with a double. Young brought home two more runs with a single to center field.

Moran improved to 5-2 with the pitching victory. He struck out five batters and allowed three walks. He limited UPS to four singles -- one each in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. Meanwhile, Willamette hit .333 with 12 hits in 36 at bats. Jarvis Nohara threw the first two innings for the Loggers and fell to 3-2 with the loss.

In the second game, Doug Bloom (Fr., SS, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) was 4 for 5 with four runs and two RBIs. Six Bearcats provided two hits apiece. Webster scored three times for Willamette. Lee drove in five runs and Stalker recorded three RBIs.

Both teams scored a single run in the first inning, before Puget Sound surged to a 9-1 lead with three runs in the second inning and five runs in the third. The Loggers loaded the bases in the second stanza, then scored on a single and back-to-back walks. In the third inning, UPS benefited from a two-RBI double by Shaun Kiriu and tallied one run each on doubles by Jason Powell and by Michael Olsen.

WU got back in the game with five runs in the fourth inning. Michael Rierson (Fr., RF, Salem, OR/Sprague HS) scored the first run on a single by Bloom. The remaining four runs crossed the plate on Lee's grand slam to center field. Stalker added a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

The Bearcats eventually took an 11-10 lead in the top of the seventh. WU scored three runs in the inning, with Rierson scoring on a single by Bloom, David Tufo (Jr., 3B, San Bruno, CA/Burlingame HS) reaching home on a feilder's choice and Webster recording the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Puget Sound regained the lead in the eighth, as the Loggers tallied four runs to take a 14-11 advantage. Powell tied the game with an RBI single. Kiriu brought in two more runs with a bases-loaded single and Dakota Resnik drove in the last run with a double.

Willamette fell one run short in its efforts to tie the game in the Bearcats' final at bat. With two outs and runners at first and second, Stalker singled to left field, allowing Webster to score. Anderson also singled, sending Bloom across the plate. A misplay by the right fielder on Anderson's hit moved Stalker to third base. USP reliever Ryan Gustafson, who pitched the final 3 2/3 innings, struck out Young to end the game.

Gustafson improved to 4-2 with the win. Jack McGee (Jr., RHP/3B, Hillsborough, CA/St. Ignatius HS) threw the final two innings for Willamette and fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Resnik led USP in the nightcap by going 4 for 5 with two runs and three RBIs. Kiriu was 3 for 4 with two runs and four RBIs. Olsen went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs. The Loggers outhit WU, 18-16, during the game.
