Werkmeister-Martin Earns NWC Weekly Honor as Baseball Position Player

SALEM, Ore. -- Luke Werkmeister-Martin (Jr., 1B, Louisville, CO/Monarch HS) of Willamette University has been selected as the Northwest Conference Baseball Position Player Student-Athlete of the Week for his efforts against Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, Feb. 25 and Saturday, Feb. 26. During the three-game conference series, Werkmeister-Martin batted .429 while going 6 for 14 at the plate.

Willamette ended the weekend with a 5-5 overall record, including 3-3 in the NWC. The Lutes won the first two games of the series, 11-6 and 10-0, but the Bearcats won the third game, 8-4, behind a strong 3-for-5 performance from Werkmeister-Martin.

In the win, Werkmeister-Martin was 3 for 5 with a home run, two doubles, three runs, and two RBIs. For the week, he hit three doubles to go along with his homer for a .857 slugging percentage. On defense, he registered nine putouts and no errors in each of the first two games of the series. He was the designated hitter in the third game.

"Luke had a really good weekend, providing some key hits in our series against PLU," Willamette Head Baseball Coach Aaron Swick said.

Willamette will host the University of Puget Sound in a three-game NWC series this weekend, starting with a doubleheader at John Lewis Field on Saturday, March 5 at 11 a.m. (PST). The teams will play one game on Sunday, March 6 at 12 p.m.
