SALEM, ORE. -- Senior men's basketball post Cameron Mitchell (Portland, OR/Grant HS/Univ. of Redlands) was chosen for the annual J.H. Booth Award as part of the Willamette University Athletic Awards Night on Monday, May 3.
The Booth Award is presented annually to a graduating senior male student-athlete who, during his college career, developed and demonstrated strong leadership skills and outstanding athleticism while maintaining a high rank of scholarship.
Mitchell helped organize Hoopsters for Haiti, which raised $1,500 for earthquake relief, and participated in Willamettes Take A Break spring break service program. He individually organized a donation of shoes and backpacks to Mississippi youth.
Mitchell spent countless hours working as the public address voice of the Bearcats at mens and womens soccer, volleyball and softball games.
He will graduate with a degree in History. His thesis focused on Gentrification and Race Relations in Portland.
On the basketball court, Mitchell was well known for his double-double performances and his passion for the game. In his three years with Bearcat Hoop, Mitchell scored 1,200 points and grabbed 791 rebounds.
In 2009-10, Mitchell led the Northwest Conference with 21.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He shot 57.9% on field goals during the season to rank second in the conference. Mitchell also led the NWC in rebounding in 2008-09 with 11.8 boards per game, while placing third in scoring with 16.7 points per contest.
He was a First Team All-Conference selection in 2008-09 and 2009-10. As a senior, he was chosen First Team All-Region by D3Hoops.com and was selected Second Team All-Region by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Mitchell was chosen as one of ten finalists nationally for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, which is awarded to one male NCAA Division III basketball player each year.
Three other student-athletes were nominated for the J.H. Booth Award. They were Scott Hirschberger (football), Chris Platano (cross country, track and field), and Marc Whitehead (rowing).
Cameron Mitchell earned 1,200 points and 791 rebounds in three years on the Willamette men's basketball team.
