Mitchell Competes for Washington Generals against Harlem Globetrotters

SALEM, ORE. -- Former Willamette University men's basketball player Cameron Mitchell '10 (Post, Portland, OR/Grant HS) is competing for the Washington Generals against the Harlem Globetrotters in a series of games in Mexico. The six-game trip will end on Sunday (Aug 1) with a game at the Domo de la Feria in Leon, located on the Baja Peninsula.

The Generals, who have played since 1952, are the nightly opponent of the Globetrotters on their U.S. and foreign tours. Although the team has used other names, it has returned to being known as the Generals.

Mitchell hopes to earn a chance to play with the Generals on a full U.S. tour with the Globetrotters starting this fall. He also looks forward to pursuing a career in one of the professional basketball leagues in Europe.

In three seasons at Willamette, Mitchell scored 1,200 points to go with 791 rebounds. He led the Northwest Conference in scoring and rebounding in 2009-10, as he contributed 21.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. He shot 57.9% from the field.

Overall, including his freshman season at the University of Redlands, Mitchell ended his college career with 1,342 points and 959 rebounds. Earlier this summer, Mitchell played for the Salem Stampede of the National Athletic Basketball League (NABL).

The Washington Generals have filled their roster with players who have competed at small colleges or community colleges throughout the U.S. Several of the players, including Mitchell, competed in NCAA Division III. Mitchell ranked fifth in Division III in rebounds per game and was 25th in points per game in 2009-10.

The Generals typically add players to their roster who are solid citizens and are active in community service.

Mitchell participated in WU's Take a Break trip to Jonestown, Miss., during the 2007-08 academic year. He tutored students at schools, helped workers at both a church and the Jonestown Community Redevelopment Center, and assisted with sports camps. He returned to Jonestown on his own in the spring of 2008-09 after convincing Nike to donate 1,300 boxes of clothing for children. Later, Nike also donated 100 pairs of shoes and backpacks.

In January of 2010, Mitchell and teammate Bubba Lemon (Jr. in 2009-10, McMinnville, OR/Tualatin HS) organized Hoopsters for Haiti. The fundraising drive brought in $1,318 during a home doubleheader to help with earthquake relief.

Mitchell was named First Team All-NWC in 2008-09 and 2009-10. This past season, he was one of 10 finalists for the Josten's Trophy, which is awarded to the one NCAA Division III player each year based on athletics, academics and community service.
