SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University men's basketball senior post Cameron Mitchell (Portland, OR/Grant HS/Univ. of Redlands) has been named All-West Region by two organizations for his outstanding play during the 2009-10 season. He also was a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy given each year to the top NCAA Division III player according to athletic accomplishments, community service and academic success.

Mitchell was chosen First Team All-West Region by D3Hoops.com. He was named Second Team All-West Region by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Mitchell was one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy. This year's award went to Blake Schultz from Williams College (Mass.). Mitchell was the fifth Willamette player to be a finalist, as he was added to the list that already included Brad Nelson (at WU from 1995-99), Shawn Gahr (1997-00), current Head Coach Kip Ioane (player from 1997-01) and Ryan Hepp (1999-03).

In 2009-10, Mitchell led the Northwest Conference in scoring with 21.1 points per game and in rebounding with 12.5 boards per game. He was selected First Team All-NWC for the second consecutive season.

Mitchell recorded 20 double-doubles on his way to scoring 528 points and grabbing 312 rebounds this season. He scored 10 or more points in all 25 games and tallied 20 or more points 16 times. He shot 57.9% on field goals to rank second in the NWC. He tied for second in the conference in blocked shots per game (1.24), as he finished the year with 31 blocks.

He blocked at least one shot in 15 games. He blocked a career-high eight shots versus Whitman College on Jan. 3, 2010.

Mitchell completed his three years at Willamette with 1,200 points and 791 rebounds in 74 games for the Bearcats from 2007-08 through 2009-10. Including his freshman season at the University of Redlands (Calif.) in 2006-07, he played in 98 games during his career, with his efforts resulting in 1,342 points and 959 rebounds.

He scored a career-high 36 points at the University of Puget Sound on Feb. 23, 2008 to place fifth on WU's all-time single game list. This year, he grabbed a career-high 25 rebounds against George Fox University on Feb. 12, 2010 to tie for second all-time at Willamette for rebounds in a single game.

As a junior, Mitchell set the WU record for most free throws made during a single game without a miss. He broke the record by hitting 13 of 13 free throws against Whitman College on Feb. 7, 2009.

Mitchell averaged 16.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game during his three seasons at Willamette. He was accurate on 57.2% of his field goal attempts during his career with the Bearcats.

He helped Willamette finish the 2009-10 season strong with a 6-3 record in the team's final nine games. Willamette completed the year with a 9-16 overall record, including 6-10 in the NWC.

The selection process for the Jostens Trophy also considered each nominee's academic endeavors and community service. Mitchell, who is majoring in History, is working on his senior thesis, Gentrification and Race Relations in Portland, Ore., in which he is researching racial discrimination and housing discrimination as Portland was forming and growing as a city.

His community service efforts include a variety of activities. He volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Redlands (Calif.) and the YMCA of Redlands prior to transferring to Willamette. He participated in WU's Take a Break trip to Jonestown, Miss., during the 2007-08 academic year, and also went to Jonestown on his own during spring break in 2008-09.

In Jonestown, he helped tutor at schools, helped at a church and the Jonestown Community Redevelopment Center and assisted with sports camps. He convinced Nike to donate 1,300 boxes of clothing for children in Jonestown in 2008-09 and was successful in encouraging Nike to donate 100 pairs of shoes and backpacks to kids in Jonestown in the fall of 2009.

He helped organize the Hoopsters for Haiti fundraiser held by the WU basketball teams on Jan. 22, 2010. The event raised approximately $1,500 plus food and non-perishable items.
