MOSES LAKE, WASH. -- Willamette University senior golfer Shane Adversalo (Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) tied for the fifth lowest round of the second day at the Northwest Conference Spring Classic on Sunday, April 11, as he made a huge move from 18th place into a tie for ninth in the final standings. Adversalo shot a 74 in the second round on The Links at Moses Pointe to join two other competitors tied at 152 for the 36-hole event.
The Bearcats finished eighth in the team standings. Whitworth University won the tournament title.
Max Bonk of Pacific University, who started the day four strokes off the lead, shot a 71 to tie Cameron Whittle of Whitworth atop the leaderboard at 143. Bonk won the tie-breaker for medalist honors, as he recorded a birdie on the second playoff hole.
At the end of the first day, Tyler Nelson of Linfield College held the lead after posting a 68 for the low round of the tournament. Whittle was in second place after carding a 69 in the first round, while Bonk ended the day in third place at 72.
Nelson registered a 76 on the second day and finished third overall at 144. Whittle earned a 74 in the second round to tie Bonk for first place.
Steve Campbell from Whitman College was fourth at 146 (74-72). Jared Descoteaux of Whitworth placed fifth with a two-day total of 147 (73-74). Ryan Young, also from Whitworth, carded 74 in both rounds to take sixth place at 148. Yutaro Sakamoto Linfield was seventh at 150 (75-75), while Joe Rychard of Linfield placed eighth at 151 (80-71).
The three-way tie for ninth involved Adversalo, along with Greg Kirkpatrick and Marc Phillips from the University of Puget Sound. Adversalo recorded 78-74--152, while Kirkpatrick went 75-77--152 and Phillips earned 75-77--152.
Robbie Beard (Sr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS) of Willamette moved up several positions on the second day, as he advanced into a tie for 19th after beginning the round tied for 22nd. Beard carded an 80 in the first round and a 77 in the second round for an overall total of 157.
Whitworth claimed the team title with a score of 592 (293-299). Linfield took second 10 strokes off the pace at 602 (305-297). Puget Sound was third at 611 (300-311) and Pacific was fourth at 615 (308-307).
Whitman placed fifth with a score of 626 (313-313), while Pacific Lutheran University was sixth at 641 (328-313). George Fox University took seventh at 642 (320-322), Willamette was eighth at 648 (329-319), and Lewis & Clark College finished ninth at 696 (358-338).
WU picked up three strokes on George Fox in the second round, but the Bearcats weren't able to pass the Bruins in the standings. The Bearcats shot 319 on the second day, compared to 322 for GFU.
The NWC Spring Classic and the NWC Fall Classic each count for one-fourth of the overall conference title. The final half of the NWC title will be determined at the Northwest Conference Championship on April 25-26. The championship will be held at Heron Lakes Golf Course in Portland, Ore.
Shane Adversalo earned a score of 74 on the second day of the NWC Spring Classic to tie for ninth at 152.
