PORTLAND, ORE. -- Willamette University concluded the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championship in eighth place, as second round action ended at the Heron Lakes Golf Club on Sunday, April 25. Whitworth University, which shot back-to-back scores of 309, won the tournament title with an overall score of 618 for 36 holes.
The Pirates won by just two strokes over the University of Puget Sound, which finished second at 620. Linfield College and Pacific University tied for third place four strokes behind Whitworth, as the Wildcats and Boxers each scored 622.
Whitman College was fifth at 642, one stroke in front of Pacific Lutheran University, which took sixth at 643. George Fox University placed seventh at 649, Willamette was eighth at 696 and Lewis & Clark College was ninth at 719.
Whitworth also won the overall NWC men's golf championship. The overall title includes the NWC Championship tournament (50%), the NWC Fall Classic (25%) and the NWC Spring Classic (25%).
Medalist honors went to Ryan Young of Whitworth with a two-day total of 151 (74-77). Young led by three strokes after the first day, but earned the championship by one stroke.
Max Bonk of Pacific, Tyler Nelson of Linfield and Marc Phillips of Puget Sound formed a three-way tie for second at 152. Bonk shot 81 in the first round and recorded the low score of the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 in the second round. Nelson carded 77-75 and Phillips shot 80-72. Cameron Whittle from Whitworth placed fifth at 154 (77-77).
Willamette's top finisher was Robbie Beard (Sr., Yankton, SD/Yankton HS), who carded a solid 79 on the second day to offset an 85 in the first round. Beard tied for 30th overall. Shane Adversalo (Sr., Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) of WU, who was tied for 14th with an 80 in the first round, shot an 88 on Sunday and tied for 35th.
