SALEM, ORE. -- Noah Horstman, an assistant golf professional at Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, has been hired as the head coach of men's and women's golf at Willamette University. Horstman replaces men's coach Steve Prothero and women's coach Tom Hibbard, who both retired this spring.
"Im thrilled that we were able to find someone of his experience and caliber who is a fully-certified teaching professional," Director of Athletics Mark Majeski said. "We're looking forward to his teaching expertise helping our student-athletes maximize their golfing abilities."
Horstman will continue to serve as an assistant golf professional at Illahe Hills, which is Willamette's primary home course and practice site for the men's and women's golf teams. Horstman completed the PGA/PGM program in two years and has been working at Illahe Hills since October of 2007.
He graduated from Pacific University (Ore.) in 2006 with a B.A. degree in Business and an emphasis in Marketing. While at Pacific, he competed on the golf team and earned All-Northwest Conference honors in 2005-06. He was the team captain from 2004 through 2006.
He was the team's representative to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2002-03. He also was a member of the Student Alumni Relations Council at Pacific and was the president of the local chapter in 2005-06.
Horstman is from Medford, Ore., where he worked as a grounds crew member at the Rogue Valley Country Club during summer and winter breaks while attending Pacific. Later, he served as the head golf coach at South Medford High School in 2007-08.
Prior to joining the professional staff at Illahe Hills, he was an assistant golf professional at the Centennial Golf Club in Medford from 2006-07. He also was the tournament coordinator at Centennial and was the club's webmaster.
At Illahe Hills, Horstman's duties include golf instruction, managing the website and assisting with all areas of the golf operation. He assists and coordinates member events as well as outside competitions hosted by the country club.
He implemented a week-long junior golf program in 2008 and continued the program in 2009. He also has helped with the summer junior golf program.
Horstman will begin his Willamette duties immediately. The Bearcats compete in NCAA Division III and the Northwest Conference.
