SALEM, ORE. -- Corban University defeated Willamette University in men's golf on Tuesday, Oct. 5 in a dual meet at Creekside Golf Club using a format similar to the Ryder Cup. Corban won the competition by a final score of 29-13. The event featured three matches between pairs of Bearcats and Warriors.

Each match covered 18 holes with 14 points up for grabs. The first six holes were played with alternate shots, while the next six holes were played with the best ball format. The final six holes were match play. One point was awarded for winning the alternate shots, one point was provided for winning the best ball, and one point was available per hole for each pairing in match play.

In the first match, Jacob Simonson (Fr., Fairview, OR/Reynolds HS) and Conner Boyd (Fr., Oregon City, OR/Oregon City HS) of WU took on Corban's Michael May and Joey Ziogas. The Warriors built a 2-0 lead by winning the six holes of alternate shot and the six holes of best ball. In match play, May defeated Simonson, 4-2, while Boyd and Ziogas tied, 3-3. Corban claimed a 9-5 lead at the end of the 18 holes.

The second match involved Daniel Rehm (Fr., Salem, OR/South Salem HS) and Dylan Johnson (Fr., Seattle, WA/Skyview HS) of Willamette against Jared Rust and Chris Dudley of Corban. Rust and Dudley won the alternate shot portion of the match for one point and added a second point by winning the best ball.

During match play, Dudley defeated Rehm, 5-1, for the Warriors and Johnson downed Rust, 4-2, for the Bearcats. Corban completed the second match with a 9-5 win, increasing its overall lead to 18-10.

In the final match of the day, Kyle Flowers (Fr., Vancouver, WA/Skyline HS) and Paul Shoji (Fr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) battled Joey Duwe and Steve Landis of Corban. The alternate shot and best ball were won by the Warriors.

The match play schedule pitted Flowers against Landis and Shoji versus Duwe. Landis outscored Flowers, 4.5-1.5. Duwe slipped past Shoji, also by a 4.5-1.5 score. Corban finished the third match with an 11-3 margin to attain the final score of 29-13.

Up next for Willamette is the Whitman Invitational, set for Oct. 16-17 at the Wine Valley Golf Course in Walla Walla, Wash.
