SALEM, Ore. -- Willamette University student-athlete Alex Weirth (Sr., Port Orchard, WA/Crosspoint Academy) has been chosen as the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Week for his accomplishments at the Bulldog Fall Invitational (Sept. 19-20) and the Wildcat Invitational (Sept. 24-25). Weirth won the individual title at the Wildcat Invitational in a playoff at Michelbook Country Club in McMinnville, Oregon. Earlier in the week, he tied for fourth at the Bulldog Fall Invitational, held at Redlands Country Club in Redlands, California.

He helped Willamette win the team championship at the Wildcat Invitational by three strokes, after leading the Bearcats to second place, one stroke out of the lead, at the Bulldog Fall Invitational. As a team, Willamette shot 844 (283-277-284) during the 54-hole event on the par 70 course in Redlands. In McMinnville, the Bearcats carded a team score of 581 (290-291) for 36 holes on the par 72 course.

At the Bulldog Fall Invitational, Weirth shot 207 with two rounds in the 60s (67-69-71) to end the tournament at 3-under par. In the team standings, WU was one stroke behind the winning team from Redlands, which carded a score of 843 (284-284-275). He shot 71 and 72 for a total of 143 at the Wildcat Invitational to tie for first place with teammate Jack McMullin (Jr., Seattle, WA/Roosevelt HS) and two other competitors. During the playoff, Weirth defeated McMullin on the third hole after the other two golfers in fell aside on the second hole.

"His play over the past two tournaments has been very deserving of this award," Willamette Head Men's Golf Coach Patrick Daugherty said. "He has been putting in a lot of work and we are really proud of his accomplishments."

Willamette will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9, when the Bearcats are scheduled to host the Northwest Conference Fall Classic at Creekside Golf Club in Salem. The NWC Fall Classic is one of three tournaments used to determine the NWC team champion. The other two events are the NWC Spring Classic and the NWC Tournament, both of which will be held in the spring.
