Linfield Breaks Scoreless Tie on Penalty Kick Late in First Half; Wildcats Defeat Willamette, 3-0

SALEM, ORE. Linfield College scored the games first goal on a penalty kick with 4:31 left in the first half, then added two goals in the final 18 minutes of the game, as the Wildcats defeated Willamette University, 3-0, in a Northwest Conference mens soccer game on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Sparks Field. The Wildcats moved to 5-2-2 overall, including 2-1-2 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 1-8-1 on the season and to 0-4-1 in the NWC.

Brice Lang converted the penalty kick at 40:29 to give Linfield a 1-0 halftime lead. The Wildcats tacked on an insurance goal at 72:00, with Mike Grabast providing the score on a 12-yard shot. Tim Solimano and Chris Paradis earned assists on the play.

Linfields final goal was scored by Adam Jaffe at 82:57. On the play, Paradis recorded his second assist of the game.

The Wildcats outshot the Bearcats, 24-7, including 9-5 in shots on goal. Linfield also was awarded nine corner kicks, while Willamette earned two corners.

Goalkeeper Mark Bennett (Fr., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) of Willamette registered six saves. Linfields goalkeeper, Mike Belzberg, was credited with five saves.

Austin Buell (Jr., F, Ashland, OR/Ashland HS) was Willamettes top offensive threat. He took three total shots, including two shots on goal.

The Bearcats will play their next game at home on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Pacific University. Game time at Sparks Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
