SALEM, ORE. -- Julian Esquivel and Chente Reyes each scored in the final six minutes of regulation to lead Chemeketa Community College to a 3-1 victory over Willamette University, Monday, Sept. 15 at Sparks Field. The game was an exhibition match between the NCAA Division III Bearcats and the Storm from the NJCAA.

Esquivel hit the net at 84:17 and Reyes scored exactly two minutes later to secure the win for CCC. The late scoring broke a 1-1 tie, after Willamette's Erik Kaufman (Fr., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) equalized on a 12-yard header at 72:36. Kaufman scored for the fourth game in a row, although the exhibition with Chemeketa will not count toward NCAA win-loss records or statistics.

Neither team scored in the first half, although both had quality changes. Martin Anthony of CCC recorded four saves in goal in the first half, while Mark Bennett (Jr., GK, Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) earned three saves for WU.

Both teams switched goalies at the break. Mike Foster achieved four saves for Chemeketa and Eben Hellekson (So., GK/MF, Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) was credited with one save for the 'Cats.

Chemeketa ended the night with a 19-13 advantage in total shots, but Willamette held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. Luke Lagattuta (Jr., D, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) took three shots for the Bearcats, including two shots on goal. He also provided many quality passes into the attacking third of the field and had a goal disallowed in the first half due to an offside call.

Mayo Ovallo led the Storm with five total shots. He placed three of his shots on target.

The game included 30 fouls and 12 cards issued between the teams. Willamette played shorthanded for the final 15:05 after Brendan Dineen (Fr., D, Portland, OR/Grant HS) received his second yellow card of the match.

WU achieved a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Both teams were called for offside violations three times.

Willamette opens its Northwest Conference schedule on Saturday, Sept 20, when the Bearcats will host Whitman College. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
