Five Linfield Players Score in Second Half for 5-0 Win over Bearcats

SALEM, ORE. -- Linfield College scored five goals by five different players in the second half, as the Wildcats pulled away from a 0-0 halftime tie for a 5-0 win over Willamette University, in a Northwest Conference match on Wednesday, Nov. 5. Linfield evened its overall record at 9-9, while improving to 5-8 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 3-13-1 overall, 2-10-1 in the NWC.

Kurtis Wong of Linfield assisted on the first goal and scored the fourth goal for the Wildcats. He was the only goal scorer to also earn an assist. Travis Isaacs didn't score a goal, but he provided Linfield with two assists.

The teams battled to a 0-0 deadlock over the first 45 minutes. Linfield took seven shots during the opening period, while the Bearcats created three shots prior to halftime.

Linfield claimed a 1-0 advantage when Kevin Donato scored on a 17-yard shot over the head of WU goalkeeper Mark Bennett (Jr., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) at 48:54. Wong assisted on the play with a short pass to Donato.

Spencer Winger tallied the second goal at 56:55 on a 19-yard free kick that deflected off a defender and went into the left corner of the goal. Winger kept the shot low and it remained low after the deflection.

The last three goals were recorded during the final 20 minutes. Michel Camacho scored from short range at 70:37 and was assisted by Isaacs. Wong produced the next goal on a 12-yard shot at 76:53 following a pass from Brad Hawk. Wil Hiles scored at 82:49 from 13 yards, with Isaacs achieving his second assist on the play.

Goalkeeper Jon Thompson registered the shutout for Linfield. He amassed five saves, all in the second half. Bennett made seven saves for Willamette, while Eben Hellekson (So., GK/MF, Honolulu, HI/University Laboratory School) earned one save for the Bearcats while playing the final 18 minutes.

Willamette outshot Linfield 13-9 in the second half, as both teams concluded the game with 16 shots. The Wildcats, however, built 13-5 margin in shots on goal, including 8-5 in the second half.

Casey Dineen (Jr., MF, Portland, OR/Jesuit HS) of Willamette led all players with five total shots. Luke Lagattuta (Jr., D, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) added four shots for the Bearcats. Five players topped Linfield with two shots apiece.

The Bearcats were awarded seven corner kicks compared to four for Linfield. WU held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks during the second half.

Willamette will play its final game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. (PST)
