Linfield Tallies Two Goals in Second Half, Downs Bearcats, 2-0

McMINNVILLE, ORE. -- Linfield College scored twice in the second half, including an insurance goal with 1:48 remaining, as the Wildcats defeated Willamette University, 2-0, in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Linfield moved to 6-5 on the season, 2-4 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 2-7-1 overall, 1-4-1 in the conference.

Neither team put the ball in the net in the first half, although Linfield earned a 6-2 edge in shots. WU goalkeeper Mark Bennett (Jr., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS), who finished the game with 11 saves, registered four in the first half. LC goalie Jon Thompson made one save in the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Wildcats scored the game's first goal on a shot by Michel Camacho at 65:29. He was assisted by Colin Bebee. Willamette stayed within one goal until Kurtis Wong connected for a goal at 88:12, on an assist from Zack Hubbard.

Linfield concluded the game with a 24-11 advantage in total shots. The Wildcats recorded 17 shots on goal, while Willamette achieved six.

Casey Dineen (Jr., MF, Portland, OR/Jesuit HS) led WU's attack with five shots, including three shots on goal. Ivan Gutierrez (Sr., MF, Stayton, OR/Cathedral Prep) added three shots for the Bearcats.

Bebee led all players with seven shots for Linfield (4 on goal). The Wildcats also received five shots from Travis Isaacs, who placed four of his shots on goal.

Both teams finished with four corner kicks. All of Willamette's corners, and three of Linfield's, were in the second half.

Thompson ended the game with four saves to record the shutout for Linfield. It was his third shutout of the season.

Willamette will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 with a home game against the University of Puget Sound. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
