Pacific Lutheran Slips Past Bearcats, 1-0

TACOMA, WASH. -- Pacific Lutheran University scored a goal in the first half and shut out Willamette University for the full 90 minutes, as the Lutes slipped past the Bearcats, 1-0, in a Northwest conference game on Sunday, Oct. 5. PLU upped its record to 4-5-1 overall, including 2-2-1 in the NWC. Willamette fell to 2-6-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the NWC.

The game's only goal was scored by Derek Karamatic at 29:38. He scored the goal unassisted on a free kick.

PLU took 17 shots, while the Bearcats finished with 12. The Lutes had five shots on goal, compared to four by Willamette.

Two of WU's shots on goal were just five seconds apart in the opening minute of play. Ivan Gutierrez (Sr., MF, Stayton, OR/Cathedral HS) shot at the 53-second mark. His attempt was saved by PLU goalie Daniel Mangum. Erik Kaufman (Fr., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) followed with another shot, forcing Mangum to make another save.

Mangum finished with four saves to record the shutout. Willamette goalie Mark Bennett (Jr., Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) also achieved four saves.

Pacific Lutheran earned a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. The Lutes were called for 13 fouls, while Willamette was charged with 12 infractions. Each team received one yellow card.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Linfield College. Game time for the NWC contest is slated for 7 p.m. (PDT) in McMinnville, Ore.
