Corban Uses Penalty Kick in Second Half to Down Bearcats, 1-0

SALEM, ORE. -- Corban College junior forward Ayouba Moussa scored on a penalty kick at 54:23 and the Warriors held off Willamette University to win the Capital Classic, 1-0, in the season-opener for the crosstown rivals. Corban is 1-0 on the season and the Bearcats are 0-1.

The Warriors outshot Willamette 11-3 in the first half, with both teams earning two shots on goal. Just 9:23 into the second half, WU was called for a foul inside the penalty area and Moussa converted the penalty kick.

Corban achieved an 18-7 edge in overall shots during the match. Both teams finished with four shots on goal.

Aaron Franklin of Corban recorded the shutout. He registered three saves. Willamette starter Mark Bennett (Sr., GK, Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) made two saves in the first half.

Bradley Eckerson (So., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) was WU's goalie in the second half and was in the nets for the penalty kick. He achieved one save.

Moussa led all players with six total shots, including two shots on goal. Travis Wells added two shots for the Warriors. Ross Vartain (Jr., F, Palo Alto, CA/Mid-Peninsula HS) of Willamette took two shots -- both on goal.

Willamette accumulated five corner kicks during the game, including four in the first half. Corban earned three corner kicks, two in the first half and one in the second half.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 5, when they face Simpson University in Redding, Calif. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. (PDT). Willamette will play at the Oregon Institute of Technology on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. (PDT).
