Men's Soccer Falls to Chapman, 1-0

TACOMA, WASH. -- Willamette University's men's soccer team was defeated by Chapman University 1-0 on Saturday, Sept. 12, in a game played on the University of Puget Sound campus. Chapman's Matt Prouty tallied the only goal of the game. WU fell to 1-4 overall while Chapman moved to 4-1.

Willamette gave up a goal in the first half for the first time this season. Willamette has now lost four games by a 1-0 score. Prouty's goal came just 8 minutes and 47 seconds into the game. He scored on a free kick from the left side about 16 yards deep.

Willamette took 12 shots in the game, including two shots on goal. Natividad Zavala (Fr., D, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) and Ross Vartain (Jr., F, Palo Alto, CA/Mid-Peninsula HS) each had one shot on goal. Casey Dineen (Sr., MF, Portland, OR/Jesuit HS) took five shots while Luke Lagattuta (Sr., MF, Albuquerque, NM/Highland HS) and Erik Kaufman (So., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS) had a shot apiece.

Four yellow cards were handed out during the game, two for each team. Willamette had 14 fouls compared to 15 fouls for Chapman.

Mark Bennett (Sr., GK, Salt Lake City, UT/West HS) played the first half at goal for the Bearcats. He recorded one save and gave up one goal. Bradley Eckerson (So., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) took over for the Bearcats in the second half. He held Chapman scoreless in his 45 minutes of play.

The Bearcats finished their pre-conference schedule with a 1-4 overall record. The Bearcats return to action on Sept. 19 at Sparks Field against Northwest Conference opponent Pacific Lutheran University at 2:30 p.m. (PDT).
