SALEM, ORE. -- Bob Paras (Jr., F, Yuba City, CA/Yuba City HS/Yuba College) of Willamette University scored a goal at 32:54 and Brendan Dineen (Jr., D, Portland, OR/Grant HS) tacked on a penalty kick goal early in the second half, as the Bearcats defeated Colorado College, 2-0, on Friday, Sept. 3 at Sparks Field. WU remained undefeated at 1-0-1.

Willamette goalkeeper Alfredo Zuniga (Jr., GK, Salem, OR/South Salem HS) recorded nine saves to earn his first shutout in his fifth career game played and third career start.

The Bearcats tallied their first goal of the game on a nifty attack that started with Adan Vazquez (Fr., F/MF, Woodburn, OR/Woodburn HS) receiving the ball on the right flank. Vazquez raced toward the end line and was about 15 yards out when I crossed the ball to an Paras, who was rushing toward the far post. Paras shot the ball first time into the back of the net.

Colorado College outshot Willamette 5-2 in the opening half, while forcing Zuniga to make two saves. Wil Nelp almost tied the game for the Tigers with 15 seconds on the clock, but his shot hit the crossbar and the Bearcats continued to lead 1-0 at the break.

Dineen's penalty kick occurred after Nelp was called for tripping WU's Trevor Jensen (Fr., MF, Chula Vista, CA/Bonita Vista HS) in the penalty area just 4:23 into the second half. Dineen struck the ball with force into the right side of the net.

Down by two goals, the Tigers attacked with significant numbers for the rest of the game, but couldn't battle back. Zuniga supplied a solid performance over the final 45 minutes, as he registered seven saves, including a couple denying close-range shots. He finished the game with nine saves overall.

Colorado College amassed a 20-9 advantage in total shots during the game, but had many attempts from long range. The Tigers earned a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. CC goalie Andy McGhie was credited with three saves.

Mike McGrew (So., MF, Portland, OR/Grant HS) led the Bearcats with three shots, including two shots on goal. Paras and Vazquez each registered two shots. Matt Fechter was the offensive leader for the Tigers with four shots -- all on goal.

The Bearcats will return to Sparks Field on Sunday, Sept. 5 to take on Bethel University (Minn.) at 5 p.m. (PDT). It will be WU's last home game until the Bearcats host George Fox University on Sept. 25.

With the loss, Colorado College fell to 0-2 on the season. The Tigers will remain in the Salem area to take on Whitman College at Sparks Field on Sunday at 12 p.m. (PDT). This is a time change from the original schedule in order to allow the Tigers to make their return flight to Colorado.
