WALLA WALLA, WASH. Willamette University mens tennis player Micah Mack rallied from a loss in the opening set to win his first round match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Regional, but fell in the second round, as the Bearcats six singles players and three doubles teams were eliminated from the bracket on the first day of competition, Sept. 22 in Walla Walla, Wash. The ITA Northwest Regional, hosted by Whitman College, will continue on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Mack defeated Stephan Berglund from the University of Puget Sound, 6-7, 6-1, 10-6, in the first round. After losing the first set in a tie-breaker, Mack easily took the second set, then won the 10-point tie-breaker played in place of a third set. Mack lost in the round of 32 to Jake Cappell of Whitman, the #11 seed, 6-1, 6-2.

Geoff Klein of Willamette also won his first round match, as he downed Jordan Vargas of George Fox University, 6-1, 1-6, 10-4. Klein fell in the round of 32 to #5-seed Kevin Floyd from Pacific Lutheran University, 6-1, 6-0. Donovan LeDoux of the Bearcats received a first-round bye, then won the first set against Robert Rye of Whitman in the round of 16, before Rye won, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5. Three Bearcats lost in the first round.

In doubles, Klein and Jeff Hancock, defeated Vargas and Nick Jenness of George Fox in the first round, 8-3. Klein and Hancock were defeated by Kyle Anderson and Wes Gabrielson of Linfield College, the #5-seeded team, 8-1, in the round of 16.

Mack and LeDoux received a first round bye for the Bearcats. They were defeated in the round of 16 by the team of Rich Minice and Nick Ruess from Linfield, 8-5. Willamettes doubles team of Shaun Mihalick and Fitz Paccione were defeated in the opening round by Jasper Follows and Justin Hayashi of Whitman, 8-1.
