(MEN'S TENNIS) NEWBERG, ORE. -- Willamette University defeated George Fox University, 8-1, on Thursday, March 15 in a rescheduled Northwest Conference men's tennis match originally slated for last Friday (March 9). The Bearcats improved to 4-7 overall, 4-6 in the NWC, while the Bruins fell to 2-6 overall, 2-6 in the NWC.
Willamette won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches. WU's top singles player, Donovan LeDoux (Fr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS) defeated Kyle Pearson at the #1 position, 6-4, 3-6, (10-6), in a match decided by a super tie-breaker instead of a third set. LeDoux also teamed with Ethan Heinrich (Fr., San Carlos, CA/Davis HS) to win #2 doubles over GFU's team of Jordon Vargas and Nick Jenness, 8-6.
Eric MacMillan (Jr., Twin Falls, ID/Twins Falls HS) was victorious for Willamette at #2 singles, as he took a decisive 6-1, 6-1 result over Mac Ovenell. The Bearcats also won #3 singles, as Fitz Paccione (Jr., Encinitas, CA/Cathedral Catholic) sailed past Jenness, 6-1, 6-1. MacMillan and Shaun Mihalick (Sr., Mukilteo, WA/Eastlake HS) combined to win #1 doubles, 8-4, over Pearson and Schulz of GFU.
The Bruins attained their only win at #5 singles, where Vargas outlasted Heinrich, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, (10-8). WU and George Fox are scheduled to meet again on April 13 at Willamette.
