Action Continues on Sunday and Monday at Whitman College
WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Three Willamette University men's tennis players advanced to the Round of 16 with victories in the first two rounds of singles on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the USTA/ITA Pacific Northwest Fall Championships, hosted by Whitman College.
Cody Ferguson (Sr., North Bend, OR/North Bend HS/Western Oregon Univ.) , seeded #4, defeated Tyler Day of Linfield College, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round. In the second round, Ferguson moved past Peter Brown from George Fox University, 6-3, 6-4.
Unseeded Jack Schreiber (Fr.) downed Nolan Staples of GFU in the first round, 6-0, 6-1. He then upset Taylor Dickey of Pacific Lutheran University, one of four athletes seeded #9, by a final score of 4-6, 6-2, 11-9, in a match decided by a super tie-breaker.
Also reaching the Round of 16 for Willamette's men's tennis team was Garrett Vincent (So., Seattle, WA/Seattle Prep/Bellevue CC). Vincent upended one of the #9 seeds, Cody Levien of Linfield, in the first round. Vincent and Levien split the first two sets, before Vincent prevailed in a super tie-breaker. During the second round, Vincent defeated Abe Noyes from the University of Puget Sound.
In doubles, Schreiber and Devin Abney (Fr.) won their first round match before losing in the second round. Willamette's other two doubles teams were eliminated in the first round.
Complete results were not immediately available. The tournament will continue on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 25-26.
