Redfield Earns Provisional Qualifying Time in 1,500 Meters

SALEM, ORE. -- Stefan Redfield (Jr., Sisters, OR/Sister HS) of Willamette University achieved an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time in the 1,500-meter run and improved his personal record by more than two seconds with a time of 3:53.30, during the WU Last Chance on Tuesday, May 18 at the Charles Bowles Track.

Redfield has registered qualifying marks in two events this spring. Earlier in the season, he earned a provisional qualifying time of 14:42.26 in the 5,000-meter run.

Willamette's Trevor Bassett-Smith (Sr., Keizer, OR/McNary HS/Western Oregon Univ.) recorded a provisional qualifying distance of 175' 3" to win the hammer throw. Bassett-Smith's top distance this season is 180' 5" set just last week at the Willamette vs. GFU-Linfield-WOU Meet on May 13.

In the men's 400-meter dash, Paul Winger (So., Bonney Lake, WA/Bonney Lake HS) of Willamette set a personal best with a time of 48.57 seconds to take first place. He finished in front of 800-meter specialist Emanuel Bofa of Whitworth University, who took second place in the 400 at 48:70 seconds. Winger also won the 200-meter dash in 22.28 seconds.

Winger, who won his second NWC title in the 400 earlier this spring, missed the provisional qualifying mark of 48.50 by 0.07 seconds on Tuesday. His previous top time was 48.98 seconds set during the finals of the NWC Championships on April 24 and at the Oregon Relays on May 1.

Leo Castillo (So., Parkdale, OR/Hood River Valley HS) of WU won the 5,000-meter run. He finished the race in 15:13.42 to win by more than 11 seconds over Francis Reynolds from the University of Puget Sound in second at 15:24.74.

Josh Clothier (Jr., Walla Walla, WA/Walla Walla HS) provided the Bearcats with in a victory in the shot put. His top toss went 50' 4.50". David Oppat (Jr., Beaverton, OR/Southridge HS) of Willamette took fourth place with a throw of 48' 3.25".

Clothier and Oppat (Jr., Beaverton, OR/Southridge HS) competed for WU in the discus throw. Clothier placed third with a toss of 151' 2" and Oppat was fourth at 150' 0". Clint Moore of Linfield College won the event with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 156' 2".

Competing in two events, Jennifer Luecht (Sr., Milwaukie, OR/Rex Putnam HS) won both for Willamette. She recorded a time of 26.03 seconds in the 200-meter dash and clocked in at 58.80 seconds in the 400-meter dash.

Christina Edholm (Sr., Pleasanton, CA/Foothill) competed unopposed in the shot put. She earned a top throw of 39' 10.00".

Kimber Mattox (So., Bend, OR/Bend HS/Cornell Univ.) placed second in the 1,500-meter run. She recorded a time of 4:43.35. Mattox has earned NCAA provisional qualifying times this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:41.78) and the 1,500 (4:36.06).

Joy Shufeldt of Whitworth University barely missed an automatic qualifying time in the women's 10,000-meter run. She completed the race in a provisional qualifying time of 34:59.50 just 1.5 seconds away from the automatic time of 34:48.00.

Shufeldt is now ranked 6th in NCAA Division III pending results from other Last Chance meets. She improved by approximately 47 seconds from her previous top time this season of 36:36.66, also set at the Charles Bowles Track during the WU Opener on March 6.

Bofa won the 800-meter run on Tuesday with a time of 1:50.84. He owns the top time in NCAA Division III in the event this season at 1:48.69. He took first place in the 800 at the NCAA Championships each of the past two seasons.

The 2010 NCAA Division III Championships are set for May 27-29 and will be hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio. Selections will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday, May 23.
