Featured Senior: Lucy Morrill

Lucy Morrill

What was your most memorable moment throughout your career at Willamette?

Getting the opportunity to contribute my senior year.

Describe your feelings when you found out the athletic events were canceled for the remainder of the year.

I felt a lot of empathy for all the spring sports athletes. As someone who really needed my senior year to have a sense of closure with basketball, it's painful to imagine that being cut short. I really feel for them.

How have you been handling life in quarantine? Are you home or on campus? What's it like learning online and not being around your teammates?

I am quarantining from my apartment in Salem. It's been weird, but not too bad. My only class this semester is my senior thesis which is pretty conducive to learning online. I am missing some of the collaborative elements of working on my thesis with the other politics majors.

What has your experience as a Bearcat taught you?

I could probably have a reasonably popular YouTube channel.

If you could leave one piece of advice for future Bearcats, what would it be?

Just try to get a good story out of whatever you do.

What are your future plans following graduation?

Move to San Diego and work for a while, maybe apply for law school down the road.

From their teammates

What was your most memorable moment of Lucy?

Claire Bonnet: Making jokes together on the bench, playing PIG after practice, and hitting shots "from the Gordie."

Avery Mickelsen: Lucy is one of the funniest people I know. She never believes me -- but it's true. I think I will always remember Lucy for her locker room persona, spilling water in the training room and somehow managing not to upset Ken, and all the days she brought a cup of black coffee to early morning conditioning. I don't know how she ran a three-minute drill after it!

How has Lucy impacted you in your sport or in life?

Claire Bonnet: She's taught me to never settle for anything less than you deserve, in sports and in life, and that just a little bit of humor can brighten anyone's day.

Avery Mickelsen: Lucy taught me so much about believing in myself and my abilities. I will always cherish the years Lucy and I got to be friends, and I can't wait to continue our friendship after she graduates. Her support will always mean a great deal to me.

What makes Lucy special?

Claire Bonnet: She brings a sense of humor wherever she goes, and I can always count on her to make me laugh.

Avery Mickelsen: She's tough, she doesn't quit, and she is hilarious. Her jokes are perfect, and I will never forget her impersonations. On top of everything else, she is supportive and caring and truly wants what is best for her teammates.

Is there anything Lucy brought to the program that will have a lasting impact?

Claire Bonnet: In my eyes, Lucy is going to be known for being outspoken and for always standing up for what she believes in even if other people don't agree with her ideas/opinions.
