Bearcats Rally in Second Half for 3-1 Win at Pacific

FOREST GROVE, ORE. -- Willamette University scored three goals in the second half to rally from a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeat Pacific University, 3-1, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer game at Lincoln Park Stadium on Friday, Nov. 2. Kelsey Rogel (Jr., F/D, Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) scored the tying goal just over five minutes into the second half and Alex Batzer (Fr., MF, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) tallied the go-ahead goal with 7:47 left in the game.

The Bearcats improved to 7-9-2 overall, including 6-7-1 in the NWC. Pacific dropped to 4-14-1 overall, 2-13-0 in the NWC.

Pacific scored on a 10-yard shot by Meghan Fredette at 41:41 for a 1-0 lead. Fredette produced the goal after Willamette goalkeeper Kelli Gano (Fr., Portland OR/Grant HS) deflected a shot by Shelley Martindale. The Boxers continued to hold the lead at halftime.

Willamette tied the score at 50:22 on a free kick by Rogel from the top of the 18-yard box. Rogel's shot sailed over the head of the Pacific goalkeeper and into the net.

The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead when Batzer scored at 82:13, after Rogel sent the ball into the box on a corner kick. Batzer kept possession as she moved away from a group of players, then chipped the ball into the left side of the net.

Lauren Miller (Portland, OR/Grant HS/Northwestern State, La.) added an insurance goal at 87:53. She scored on a break-away after receiving a through pass from Michelle Noelke (Fr., F, Edmonds, WA/Roosevelt HS). It was Miller's 11th goal of the season and her fifth goal in Willamette's last four games.

WU concluded the game with a 23-17 deficit in total shots. Pacific also held an edge in shots on goal, taking 12 to the Bearcats' eight. The Bearcats achieved eight corner kicks -- four in each half, while Pacific earned two corner kicks during the game.

Martindale took six of the Boxers' total shots, while Rogel and Miller each recorded six shots for Willamette. Gano made 11 saves for the Bearcats, while Pacific goalkeeper Sydney Vincent earned five saves.

The Bearcats will conclude the season on Saturday, Nov. 3, when they host Pacific Lutheran University at Sparks Field. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (PDT).
