Willamette and Whitman Battle to 0-0 Tie

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University and Whitman College battled for 110 minutes, but neither team could produce a goal, as the Bearcats and the Missionaries tied 0-0 in two overtimes, during a Northwest Conference women's soccer game at Sparks Field on Sunday, Sept. 23. Kelli Gano (Fr., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) of Willamette and Courtney Porter of Whitman registered the shutouts.

Willamette's record moved to 1-4-1 on the season, including 0-3-1 in the NWC. Whitman's record became 3-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 in the NWC.

The Bearcats achieved an 11-9 edge in shots during regulation, but Whitman claimed a 4-1 edge in shots during the two extra periods, giving the Missionaries a slim 13-12 advantage in shots overall. Both teams had four shots on goal and both goalies made four saves. Whitman concluded the game with a 9-6 lead in corner kicks.

Lauren Miller (Jr., F, Portland, OR/Northwestern State, La.) led Willamette with seven total shots, including three shots on goal. Kristen Berndt took six shots for Whitman, with one shot on goal.

WU committed 17 fouls, while Whitman was called for 16 fouls. There were no yellow cards or ejections.

Willamette will play again on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Sparks Field against Lewis & Clark College. The NWC match scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. (PDT).
