Willamette Outshoots Chapman, 21-5, but Panthers Win 1-0 in Overtime

SALEM, ORE. -- Willamette University outshot Chapman University 21-5 in totals shots on Friday, Oct. 26 at Sparks Field, but the visiting Panthers won 1-0 in overtime. The game's only goal was scored by Alicia Fraticelli at 95:26 and was assisted by Stephanie Lambrakis.

Willamette's edge in total shots included a 20-4 margin during regulation. The Bearcats hit the post once and had CU goalie Brittni Marciano make three consecutive saves in a five-second span late in the first half. The Bearcats earned a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.

On the scoring play, Fraticelli received the ball from Lambrakis and went one-on-one against WU goalkeeper Kelli Gano (Fr., Portland, OR/Cleveland HS). Fraticelli's shot from eight yards out found the net to end the game in the first of two potential sudden-death overtime periods. Chapman improved to 8-7-2. Willamette fell to 5-9-2.

Kelsey Rogel(Jr., F/D, Tacoma, WA/Bellarmine Prep) led the Bearcats with 8 total shots and 3 shots on goal. Lauren Miller (Jr., F, Portland, OR/Grant HS/Northwestern State, La.), who recorded a 3-goal hat trick for Willamette in a 3-0 win over Lewis & Clark College on Tuesday, had four total shots and two shots on goal against Chapman.

Willamette held an 8-1 edge in shots during the first half, but Chapman almost scored on its only shot of the period. Brittany Botterill took the attempt at 23:58 and hit the crossbar.

With less than four minutes left in the half, Willamette's Rogel, Michelle Noelke (Fr., F, Edmonds, WA/Roosevelt HS) and Miller were stopped just seconds apart by Marciano, starting at the 41:20 mark. The three-shot barrage occurred just over a minute after Marciano made a save on a shot by Alex Batzer (Fr., MF, Medford, OR/North Medford HS).

Starting at 72:35, the Bearcats took a trio of shots in about a minute and a half. Samantha Post (Jr., MF/D, Philomath, OR/Philomath HS) took the second of the three shots and hit the post at 73:25.

Marciano finished with nine saves to earn the shutout for the Panthers. Gano registered two saves for the Bearcats. Willamette achieved a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, including 7-2 in the second half.

The Bearcats will play at home again on Sunday, Oct. 27, against Linfield College. Game time at Sparks Field is set for 5 p.m. (PDT).
