SALEM, ORE. -- Senior defender Kelsey Rogel came forward on a corner kick and scored from yards out 25:51 into the game for the only goal as Willamette University defeated Pacific University, 1-0, at Sparks Field on Saturday, Oct. 4. The Bearcats, who outshot Pacific, 18-1, improved to 5-4 on the season, 3-2 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific fell to 4-4 overall, 3-1 in the NWC.

Rogel scored the goal at the far post after receiving the corner kick from Emily Gross (Sr., F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS). Gross received an assist on the play. It was the first goal of the season for Rogel, who also led WU's defensive efforts against the Boxers.

After the Bearcats outshot Pacific 8-1 in the first half, the Boxers pressed forward over the final 45 minutes and had a respectable share of possession. Even so, Pacific couldn't add to its shot total, while WU took an additional 10 shots.

Willamette achieved a 5-0 edge in shots on goal, forcing Pacific goalkeeper Erin Ichimura to make four saves. Kelli Gano (So., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) provided the Bearcats with several stellar defensive plays, but did not have to record a save to earn the shutout. Gano left the goal line to intercept several through passes by Pacific, including two where she went to the ground and grabbed the ball as a forward arrived for the Boxers.

Willamette achieved a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, including 5-2 in the first half. Willamette committed 12 fouls, while Pacific ended the game with six fouls.

In its first nine games, WU has played seven games decided by a 1-0 score. Willamette is 4-3 in those games, including 3-1 at Sparks Field.

The Bearcats will play again on Sunday, Oct. 5 at Pacific Lutheran University. Game time in Tacoma, Wash., is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PDT).
