Janny Earns a Goal and an Assist to Lead Willamette Past Whitman

WALLA WALLA, WASH. -- Rachel Janny (Sr., F, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) provided a goal and an assist to lead Willamette University to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Whitman College in Northwest Conference action on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Bearcats moved to 4-4-1 overall, 3-2 in the NWC, while Whitman dropped to 2-6-1 overall, 1-5 in the conference.

Janny assisted on the game's first goal, scored by Stephanie Skelly (So., MF, Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS) at 26:57. Skelly earned the goal with a short header into the far post. Whitman equalized with a 6-yard header into the net by by Corina Gabbert, assisted by a corner kick from Libby Watkins at 38:22. The teams were tied, 1-1, at halftime.

The winning goal was scored by Janny at 61:27. She shot from 15 yards into the left side of the goal. Alex Batzer (Jr., F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) recorded an assist on the play.

Whitman achieved 17 shots during the game, and Willamette attained 14 shots. The Bearcats claimed a 9-8 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes. Each team had seven shots on goal during the contest.

WU goalkeeper Kelli Gano (Jr., Portland, OR/Grant HS) registered three saves in the first half. Jill Schneeman (So., GK, Burien, WA/Mount Rainier HS) played in goal for the Bearcats in the second half and was credited with three saves. Courtney Porter contributed five saves for Whitman.

The Bearcats will continue their swing through eastern Washington on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Whitworth University. Game time in Spokane is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
