Janny Scores with 1:15 Left in Regulation as Bearcats Tie Whitman, 1-1

SALEM, ORE. -- Senior forward Rachel Janny (Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) scored a goal on a 5-yard header with 1:15 remaining in regulation to help Willamette University rally for a 1-1 tie with Whitman College in a two-overtime game played on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Sparks Field. The Bearcats moved to 8-8-2 overall, 7-6-1 in the Northwest Conference. Whitman went to 7-9-2 overall, 6-8-1 in the NWC.

Janny's game-tying goal followed a header by Stazzy Groleau (Sr., D, Mountain View, CA/Mountain View HS), who sent the ball from the left side of the penalty area to the edge of the goalie box. Janny also headed the ball, sending it into the left corner of the goal.

Corina Gabbert scored for Whitman in the first half, just over 40 minutes into the game. It was her 16th goal of the season. She was assisted by Claire Westcott.

Willamette opened up the second half with a strong shot by Stephanie Skelly (So., MF, Poulsbo, WA/North Kitsap HS) that hit the crossbar at 53:05. Skelly's shot was Willamette's best scoring opportunity until late in the second half when the Bearcats were able to tie the game.

The Missionaries had an opportunity to take a two-goal lead when Gabbert attempted a penalty kick with 15:07 remaining in regulation. Gabbert's shot was wide right.

Jill Schneeman (So., GK, Burien, WA/Mount Rainier HS) started in goal for the Bearcats and Kelli Gano (Jr., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) played the final 65 minutes. Schneeman recorded one save during the first half. Gano recorded two saves. Whitman's 'keeper, Courtney Porter, recorded five saves during the game.

The Bearcats are in third place in the NWC standings with two games remaining in the season. Willamette will host Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, Nov. 6 at Sparks Field. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. (PST).

WU will conclude the season on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Pacific University. Kickoff in Forest Grove, Ore., is slated for 11 a.m. (PST).

Rachel Janny scored the game-tying goal for Willamette on a 5-yard header at 88:45.
