Willamette Drops Close Match to George Fox, 1-0

NEWBERG, ORE. -- The Willamette University women's soccer team played well at George Fox University but was defeated 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 27. Willamette had multiple strong scoring opportunities late in the second half. Even so, the Bearcats were held scoreless by George Fox.

The Bruins recorded the only goal of the game when Kirsten Cardwell scored off a rebound. She was assisted by Jenny McKinsey. Willamette took six shots in the first half compared to four for GFU.

Junior Kelli Gano (GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) registered two saves while playing goalkeeper for the Bearcats during the first half of play. Jill Schneeman (So., GK, Burien, Wash./Mount Rainier HS) had one save for WU during the second half.

For the game, the Bearcats outshot George Fox 16-8. Willamette controlled the ball for most of the game, but was simply unable to find the back of the net. Each team had four shots on goal and took three corner kicks.

Willamette fell to 3-4-1 overall, 2-2-0 in the Northwest Conference. George Fox climbed to 4-4-0 and 1-3-0 in conference. The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Whitman College. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. (PDT) in Walla Walla, Wash.
