Willamette Shoots Past Lewis & Clark, 2-0

SALEM, ORE. -- The Willamette University womens soccer team defeated Lewis & Clark College at Sparks Field on Sept. 26. Willamette, which won the game 2-0, climbed to 3-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Northwest Conference. Lewis & Clark dropped to 2-2-3 and 1-2-0 in the conference.

The Bearcats scored their first goal on a picture-perfect shot by Haley Rosenthal (Sr., MF, Cheyenne, WY/Cheyenne East HS) with the assist from Rachel Janny (Sr., F, Olympia, WA/Olympia HS). Rosenthal took a cross from the left by Janny and found the right side of the net from five yards out for her first goal of the season.

WUs second goal came with 31 minutes remaining in the game. Ariel Wilson (Fr., MF, Fort Collins, CO/Poudre HS) scored her second goal of the season from ten yards out. Wilson was assisted by Kimber Mattox (So., MF, Bend, OR/Cornell University).

Kelli Gano (Jr., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) played the first half in goal for the Bearcats and registered one save in her 45 minutes of play. In the second half, Jill Schneeman (So., GK, Burien, Wash./Mount Rainier HS) picked up where Gano left off, registering one save and giving up no goals during her 45 minutes.

For the game, the Bearcats took 13 shots compared to the Pioneers' six. Willamette held Lewis & Clark to just three shots in each half. WU achieved a 6-2 advantage in shot on goal.

The Bearcats are back in action on Sunday, Sept. 27 at George Fox University. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. (PDT) in Newberg, Ore.
