Pirates Plunder Bearcat Women's Soccer, 4-1

Wetzel Nets Goal for Willamette

SPOKANE, WASH. -- The Whitworth University Pirates scored three goals in the first half and added one more in the second half to defeat the Willamette University women's soccer team, 4-1, on Saturday, Oct. 30. Whitworth improved to 12-5-1 overall and 10-3-1 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette is now 6-9-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the NWC.

Whitworth limited Willamette to just three shots during the game, including one shot on goal. The Pirates benefited from a strong offensive attack and had 12 shots and nine shots on goal.

Molly Moore and Sarah Berentson each scored a goal early in the first half for the Pirates.

Whitworth held a 2-0 lead when Sabine Wetzel (Fr., MF, Martinez, CA/Campolindo HS) scored her fourth goal of the season to pull Willamette within one goal at 26:29. Wetzel was assisted by senior Alex Batzer (F, Medford, OR/North Medford HS) on the play. The assist was Batzer's fifth of the season.

Cory Druffel added another goal for Whitworth in the 35th minute to give the Pirates a 3-1 advantage at halftime. Whitworth added its final goal when Berentson recorded her second goal of the game at 70:39.

Kelli Gano (Sr., GK, Portland, OR/Cleveland HS) made five saves in goal for the Bearcats.

Willamette will play Whitman College on Sunday, Oct. 31 in Walla Walla, Wash. Game time is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
