Three Goals in First Half Send Puget Sound Past Bearcats, 3-0

Willamette's Shutout Streak Ends after an Impressive 493 minutes, 40 seconds

TACOMA, WASH. -- The University of Puget Sound scored three goals in the first half, and the Loggers went on to defeat visiting Willamette University, 3-0, on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Puget Sound, ranked #4 in the West Region of NCAA Division III, improved its record to 10-2-2, including 8-1-2 in the Northwest Conference. The Loggers are in second place in the NWC standings with 26 points, two points behind Linfield College. Willamette moved to 4-10-2 overall, 2-8-2 in the NWC.

The Loggers tallied their first goal at 10:48 on a shot by Amalia Acorda-Fey. She shot from 17 yards and sent the ball into the net near the far post. The goal, which was unassisted, ended the Bearcats' defensive shutout streak at 493 minutes and 40 seconds.

Willamette's streak lasted more than four-and-a-half games prior to Saturday's contest, including six overtime periods -- two in each of three games.

UPS increased its lead to 2-0 at 22:02 when Kylie Beeson scored on a header from the left post into the center of the goal. She was assisted by Robin Vieira, whose cross set up the header. It was Beeson's fourth goal of the season.

The third score was an own goal by Willamette when the ball deflected off a defender and into the goal at 29:06. Neither team scored during the remainder of the game.

Puget Sound goalkeeper Casey Thayer placed the first 45 minutes, recorded three saves and received the win to improve to 3-2-0. Lauren Thomas completed the game in goal for UPS.

Emily Sewall (Fr., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) played all 90 minutes for the Bearcats. She provided WU with three saves. Sewall's record fell to 1-1-2, as she took her first collegiate loss after achieving a win and two ties.

The Loggers outshot Willamette 11-7 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. Puget Sound earned a 3-1 margin in corner kicks.

Paige Lancourt (Sr., MF, Eagle, ID/Eagle HS) and Emma Sanders (Fr., MF, Kennewick, WA/Southridge HS) each took two shots for Willamette. Annie Jonsson led UPS with three shots.

Willamette is slated to return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash. The NWC matchup will get underway at 11 a.m. (PDT).
