PORTLAND, Ore. -- Shanna Keil (Fr., M, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) picked an opportune time to score her first goal for the Willamette University Bearcats. She sent the ball into the net with 48 seconds left in the second overtime to give Willamette a 1-0 victory at Lewis & Clark College on Thursday, Oct. 6. The win lifted the Bearcats to 5-5-1 on the season, 2-4-1 in the Northwest Conference. L&C fell to 4-7-0, including 3-4-0 in the NWC.

Kate Matthews (So., M, Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) set up the winning play. As the game entered the final minute of action, Matthews controlled the ball about 25 yards away from the goal. She saw where her teammates were running and sent a crossing pass toward the far post, where Keil took the game-winning shot.

Willamette has been successful in overtime this season. The Bearcats are now 3-0-1 in overtime games, with single-overtime wins against Warner Pacific College on Sept. 4 and Oregon Institute of Technology on Sept. 11, plus Thursday's two-overtime win at L&C. In addition, the Bearcats tied University of Puget Sound, 0-0, in two overtimes on Oct. 1. All three of the previous overtime games were played at Sparks Field on the Willamette campus.

The Bearcats ended the evening with a 16-12 margin in total shots and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Liz Stewart (So., D/F, Sisters, OR/Sisters HS/Texas Christian University) led the Bearcats with four total shots, including three shots on goal. Keil finished with three shots -- two on target.

Taylor Hudson topped L&C with four shots during the game, while Caroline Hennes took three shots. Hudson and Hennes each recorded one shot on goal.

The Bearcats forced goalkeeper Hannah Osmundson to make six saves for the Pioneers. In addition, three shots were kept out of the net by Lewis & Clark defenders. Seven of the overall saves were in regulation.

WU goalkeeper Emily Sewall (Sr., GK, Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande HS) had to make just three saves during regulation play. Even so, the Pioneers almost scored at 77:50 when a shot by Hennes hit the post.

The attempt by Hennes was the second of three shots for L&C in the 78th minute, and the Pioneers managed two more shots later in the second half. Willamette outshot L&C 12-3 prior to the string of five shots.

Matthews took the first shot of overtime for the Bearcats at 92:29. Hennes created a shot for the Pioneers at 94:37 that was saved by Sewall.

After a shot by Alexa Hanson of L&C was blocked at 97:52, Hennes earned a shot at 98:20 and hit the post for the second time. The final shot of the first overtime was recorded at 99:45 by Stewart of Willamette. The shot was deflected by a defender on its way toward the goal.

There were three shots in the second overtime. Emmy Manset (Jr., F, Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) earned the first shot for WU at 101:45, but Osmundson responded with a save. Lulu Adams of L&C shot wide right at 108:12. One minute later, Keil connected for the game-winning shot.

Sewall finished with four saves to register her second complete-game shutout of the season. She also has contributed to a pair of combined shutouts.

Willamette will play at George Fox University on Sunday, Oct. 9. Game time in Newberg, Oregon, is set for 12 p.m. (PDT).
