FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Emmy Manset (Jr., F, Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) scored a goal just 8:43 into the game, and the Willamette University defensive continued its strong play, as the Bearcats shut out Pacific University 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 16. Willamette evened its overall record at 6-6-2 and moved to 3-5-2 in the Northwest Conference. Pacific dropped to 6-7-1 overall, 4-6-0 in the NWC.

Manset took only one shot during the game, but she got the most out of her attempt. She shot from 11 yards into the net at near post to put the Bearcats in front. Willamette outshot Pacific 16-6 overall, including 10-4 in th first half.

Despite gaining a significant edge in shots, the Bearcats were unable to extend their lead. Willamette did, however, come very close to recording at least a second goal. Liz Stewart (So., D/F, Sisters, OR/Sisters HS/Texas Christian University) hit the crossbar on a shot at 35:27. In the second half, Kate Matthews (So., M, Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) hit the post with a shot.

The near misses didn't cost Willamette because goalkeeper Kristen Barclay (Fr., GK, Kenmore, WA/Cedar Park Christian School) and the Bearcat defense kept the Boxers from scoring and limited their offensive chances. Pacific placed two of its six shots on target, both in the first half, with Barclay earning a save each time.

It was the second shutout for Barclay in as many days. On Saturday, she made four saves in a 0-0 tie in two overtimes against Linfield College. She now has a 4-2-1 record in goal and a 0.68 goals against average. The Willamette defense has shut out three of its last four opponents, while earning a 2-1-1 record and allowing only one goal.

At Pacific on Sunday, Stewart led all players with five total shots. KayLyn Stirton (So., F, Cottonwood, CA/West Valley HS) added three shots for the Bearcats, including one shot on goal. Emma Sanders (Sr., M, Kennewick, WA/Southridge HS) finished with two shots, one on goal.

Emily Thompson provided much of Pacific's attack. She took three shots during the game with one shot on goal.

The Boxers earned a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Those set plays resulted in two shots for Pacific. In the first half, the Boxers' first corner led to a shot by Adina Goodwin at 5:58 that was saved by Barclay. In the second half, Holly Chang-Northway recorded a shot at 50:10 that was blocked following a corner kick. Pacific took the game's final corner at 88:46, but the kick did not create a shot.

Willamette will play Whitman College on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Sparks Field. Game time is slated for 12 p.m. (PDT).
