Manset Scores Twice to Lead Willamette in 3-0 Shutout Win over Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- Marley Duncan (Sr., F, Pukalani, HI/Kamehameha School) scored just over nine minutes into the game, and Emmy Manset (Sr., F, Ventura, CA/Foothill Technology HS) tallied two goals in the second half, as Willamette University defeated Pacific University, 3-0, in Northwest Conference action on Saturday, Sept. 30. It was the Bearcats' fourth shutout of the season.

Ducnan scored against goalkeeper Saya Brown in a 1-vs-1 situation at 9:04, as she shot toward the near post from 11 yards. It was Duncan's first goal of the season. Shanna Keil (So., M, Danville, CA/San Ramon Valley HS) earned an assist on the play. 

Manset added a tap-in goal early in the second half at 46:57 following a low cross from the left side by Karmen Chavez-Sam (Jr., D, Eastvale, CAEleanor Roosevelt HS). Manset completed the scoring at 58:40 on a strike from 25 yards that went into the upper corner of the goal near the far post. Keil was credited with her second assist of the afternoon.

Goalkeeper's Kristen Barclay (So., GK, Kenmore, WA/Cedar Park Christian School) and Grasiela Quevedo-Ramos (Fr., GK, Salem, OR/West Salem HS) combined for the shutout. Barclay registered one save during the first 76:15 of the game, as she stopped Pacific's only shot on target. Quevedo-Ramos did not face a shot on goal while playing the final 13:45.

Willamette advanced its record to 7-2-1 overall, 4-2-0 in the NWC. Pacific dropped to 0-7-2 on the season, 0-4-1 in the NWC.

"This was a great result for us today," Willamette Head Coach Hillary Arthur said. "We had impactful contributions on the field and we were able to tap into the depth we carry with our team."

For the season, Manset has scored a team-leading five goals. She is tied with Leah Magee of Pacific Lutheran University for first place in goal scoring in the NWC. Against the Boxers on Saturday, Manset took five shots and placed four of them on goal. Emily Thompson led Pacific with two total shots and one shot on goal.

Willamette outshot Pacific 11-4, including an 8-1 margin over the final 45 minutes. WU ended the game with a 7-1 edge in shots on target and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks. Brown made four saves for the Boxers.

"The win gives us good momentum as we look to prepare for next weekend at University of Puget Sound and at home against George Fox University," Arthur said.

On Saturday, Oct. 7 the Bearcats will play at Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, at 12 p.m. (PDT).  The Bearcats will host George Fox on Sunday, Oct. 8, also at 12 p.m.
