Borngasser Earns Eight Saves, but Chapman Downs Willamette, 2-0

ORANGE, Calif. -- Willamette University goalkeeper Sam Borngasser (Jr., GK, Grants Pass, OR/Grants Pass HS) earned eight saves, but Chapman University scored early in each half to defeat the Bearcats, 2-0, on Friday, Sept. 1 at Wilson Field. It was the season opener for both teams, as Chapman grabbed a 1-0 record and Willamette fell to 0-1.

Both of Chapman's goals were scored off a corner kick. Emma Harper registered the opening goal 2:15 into the game. She scored on a header from eight yards out after Chaslyn Nestor took the game's first corner kick. Harper was near the far post for her header, which she sent into the middle of the goal.

The Panthers doubled their lead less than five minutes into the second half at 49:47. Pilar Vanheusden scored on a shot from just inside the penalty area after a corner kick from Nestor was deflected.

Chapman outshot Willamette 23-5 and held a 13-3 margin in shots on target, but the Bearcats kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for the final 40 minutes in each half. Chapman finished with five corner kicks, while Willamette earned two corner kicks. Vanhousden led all players with four total shots, as she placed all four shots on goal. Ella Abraham (Jr., F, Lexington, KY/Lafayette HS) led WU with two shots, including one shot on goal.

Borngasser played the first 72:40 in goal for Willamette. Siera Edwards (So., GK, Portland, OR/Sunset HS) played the final 17:20 in the nets and provided WU with three saves. Aaliyah Bustamante played all 90 minutes for the Panthers and recorded three saves.

The Bearcats will play at California Lutheran University on Sunday, Sept. 3. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. PDT.
