Cleland and Haysman Boaler Each Place One Shot on Goal in 1-0 Loss to Pirates

SPOKANE, Wash. -- In a game that featured just 14 total shots and only six shots on goal, Willamette University players Sophie Cleland (Sr., F, Eugene, OR/North Eugene HS) and Jaime Haysman Boaler (So., D, Stanford, CA/Notre Dame HS) each took one of the shots on target, but Whitworth University scored on a rebound shot in the 20th minute to defeat the Bearcats, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 29.

The Northwest Conference women's soccer win moved Whitworth to 8-6-4 overall, 8-5-1 in the NWC. Willamette ended the day at 2-12-14 on the season, 2-9-3 in the NWC. Five of Willamette's losses in the NWC have been by one goal.

Baylee Trejo of Whitworth scored the game's only goal at 19:14. The play began with a shot for the Pirates from the left side by Addison Dizard that was saved by Willamette goalkeeper Siera Edwards (So., GK, Portland, OR/Sunset HS). Trejo tapped in the rebound from five yards.

Earlier in the game, Cleland put a 30-yard free kick on target from the right side in the eighth minute. The Pirates' goalie, Faith Rempfer, grabbed the shot about two yards in front of the left post. Late in the game, Haysman Boaler took a lengthy shot on goal at 81:06 that was saved by Rempfer. A shot by Ella McComas (Fy., F, Seattle, WA/Cleveland HS) was blocked by Whitworth at 83:53 and a shot by Reagan Doty (Jr., M, Riverton, UT/Riverton HS) was blocked at 86:58.

Cleland is Willamette's leading scorer this season. She has contributed four goals and one assist for nine total points.

Whitworth concluded the game with a 9-5 edge in total shots and a 4-2 margin in shots on goal. The Pirates held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Grace Hansen of Whitworth received the game's only yellow card at 86:01.

Edwards earned three saves during the game. Rempfer registered the shutout while making two saves.

The Bearcats will play at Sparks Field in the Senior Day game on Saturday, Nov. 4 against Pacific Lutheran University. Game time is set for 11 a.m. PDT.
