Bearcats battle Pirates to 1-1 draw

SALEM, Ore. — The Willamette University soccer team and Whitworth University played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Sparks Field. Willamette struck first with a goal in the first half, while Whitworth responded with an equalizer in the second half. The Bearcats' goalkeeper made six saves, including three in each half, to help secure the tie.

The first half began with Willamette setting the pace early on. Siera Edwards played a pivotal role in goal, making key saves to keep the Pirates at bay, notably stopping shots in the 11th and 34th minutes. Samantha Rodriguez broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a goal assisted by Maya Willis, giving the Bearcats the lead.

Willamette maintained defensive pressure throughout, while Whitworth attempted multiple shots but failed to convert. The half concluded with the Bearcats holding a 1-0 advantage, setting the tone for the second half.

The second half began with both teams vying for control. Whitworth's Addison Dizard scored in the 68th minute, assisted by Rebekah Hines, leveling the score. Willamette's defense, led by Edwards, responded with key saves, including a notable stop against Maia Santa Monica in the 79th minute.

Despite efforts from Claire Warthen and Amanda McArthur, who both attempted shots on goal, the Bearcats were unable to break the tie. The half concluded with the score knotted at 1-1, maintaining the deadlock into the final whistle.

Rodriguez scored the only goal for the Bearcats, converting her sole shot into a goal. Willis contributed with an assist, adding to the team's efforts. Edwards made six saves, facing 18 shots and allowing just one goal during the game.

In their next game, the Bearcats will travel to Tacoma, WA, to face the University of Puget Sound on October 25. The game is set to begin at noon.
